Yes, Glimmerglass Opera in Cooperstown, New York has reached its half-century mark. What began in 1975 as a plucky community-based initiative to mount a production of La bohème in a high school auditorium has effloresced in the course of five decades into one of North America’s premier summer opera repertory companies. And no, the referenced “Season in Red” emphatically does not denote financial deficit. In fact, the company’s latest fundraising campaign has handily attained its goal of $5,000,000, and is reportedly on course to reach its next target of $7,500,000. Red Alert Rather, the red in question is “Conklin Red”…

Based on the motion picture by Adrienne Shelly, Sara Bareilles’s Waitress is one of the most popular musicals composed in recent years. It premiered on Broadway in April 2016—making history as the first Broadway show with an all-female production team—and garnered such success that international and regional productions are still frequently staged. Since June 12, Vancouver’s Stanley Industrial Alliance Stage has been transformed into Joe’s Diner as the Arts Club Theatre Company presents this beloved musical. Having seen outstanding performances by the Arts Club before, I attended their production of Waitress with high expectations (seen July 5). I was not…

Elegies: A Song Cycle, by William Finn, is a series of songs in a musical theatre idiom dealing with bereavement and mourning. It’s a 2003 piece and firmly rooted in the trauma of the AIDS epidemic and 9/11. It’s very New York. Opera 5’s production (seen June 15) at Factory Theatre is fully staged (by Jessica Derventzis) and performed by artists from Opera 5’s Portfolio Artist Internship Program who mostly hail from McGill University. The extensive musical theatre training they have received is very evident in both their command of the required vocal style and their easy and energetic movement…

On Apr. 6, Orchestre classique de Montréal (OCM) and Jeunesses Musicales Canada (JMC) delivered a delectable treat with Opéra-bonbon: L’aventure gourmande d’Hansel et Gretel, a 60-minute operatic initiation for young audiences that managed to entertain, educate, and enchant in  equal measure. Pascal Blanchet’s adaptation is a highlight: brisk, witty, and perfectly paced to keep even the youngest minds engaged from  start to…

The 1959 film, Hiroshima mon amour depicts the brief encounter between a French actress and a former Japanese soldier, whose family perished under the bombs. Writer Marguerite Duras and director Alain Renais invoked love, death, war and reminiscence in what is considered one of the vanguard productions of the French New Wave. In her introduction to the published screenplay, Duras wrote that it was an allegory, the material of an opera. It is this idea that Australian composer and writer Rósa Lind grasped onto for her five-act, one hour and twenty minute opera written for chamber ensemble.  Christian Lapointe, general…
