With a graduate degree in music from the University of Cape Town, the South African soprano Golda Schultz spent a few years singing in African opera houses before making her first voyage across the Atlantic to successfully audition for the prestigious Juilliard School in New York City. The rest is musical history, as this fast-rising operatic soprano has since become the darling of Manhattan, and also of London, Paris, Berlin, Zürich, Copenhagen, Vienna – and everywhere else she has graced a stage. She currently can be seen and heard performing the role of Clara in The Met Opera’s Live in HD production of George Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess. For this special recital, the Grammy Award-winning star makes her Canadian debut, alongside award-winning American pianist Jonathan Ware, with a powerhouse program of all-female composers that includes works by Clara Schumann, Emilie Mayer, Rebecca Clarke, and Nadia Boulanger, as well as a beautiful newly commissioned song cycle from South African composer Kathleen Tagg in collaboration with librettist Lila Palmer. We gratefully acknowledge the support of Arts Nova Scotia.
