Gautier of Marseilles, a contemporary of Lully, was a talented composer, opera director and organist. He was the first person authorized by Lully to direct opera in the provinces. He was briefly imprisoned for debts incurred by his opera company in September 1688 after presenting Lully’s Atys in Marseilles.
