Turkwaz is a unique combination of four musician-singers who are immersed in diverse musical traditions. Maryem Hassan Tollar draws on her Arabic language heritage, while Jayne Brown and Sophia Grigoriadis bring their experience with Greek music to the mix, and Brenna MacCrimmon adds her fascination with Turkish music. They feature their collective interest in Balkan traditions, as well as Albanian, Bulgarian, and Macedonian musics. They show great love and respect for these traditions, but they are not afraid to arrange the tunes in new and unexpected ways to make them fresh.
