Les laur\u00e9ats des prix Siminovitch et Leslie Bell ont \u00e9t\u00e9 annonc\u00e9s.<\/p>&#13;\n<h4>Remembering Marlena Malas<\/h4>\n<p>Malas was \u00ab\u00a0known comically as \u2018the diva of rejection\u2019\u00a0\u00bb and was married to \u00ab\u00a0bass-baritone Spiro Malas, who died in 2019,\u00a0\u00bb according to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/slippedisc.com\/2023\/12\/death-of-juilliards-gatekeeper\/#:~:text=The%20death%20has%20been%20made,singers%20at%20the%20Chautauqua%20Institution.\"><i>Slipped Disc<\/i><\/a><\/strong>. The many musicians she taught over the course of her life \u00ab\u00a0can be heard in the world\u2019s major opera houses and concert venues and her graduates hold teaching positions at conservatories and universities worldwide,\u00a0\u00bb according to a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/TheJuilliardSchool\/posts\/pfbid02n2b7qMT37bKTyh5NPQgC2HYHX3NhfBcDm2Y3sSNwsuwrwdLdwCFJtePbovLRyx8Fl\">Facebook post<\/a> <\/strong>made by Juilliard on Dec. 5.<\/p>\n<p>Malas was also the director of Chautauqua Company, which made a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/CHQOpera\/posts\/pfbid0ietLkdWAkNuJqWcLwpXN6KsqP6SpqKX8ifqPjNPzqAV197x2rHnL4teoexhg1k9nl\">Facebook post mourning her death<\/a> <\/strong>on Dec. 5. \u00ab\u00a0A luminary in the world of opera education, Marlena\u2019s dedication to the young singer\u2019s craft spanned nearly five decades, nurturing the talents of some 2,000 students at Chautauqua beginning in 1979,\u00a0\u00bb the post says. \u00ab\u00a0Marlena\u2019s spirit endures here at Chautauqua &#8212; her artistic home of 44 years. She was there in the darkest and lightest of times,\u00a0\u00bb <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/brandon.cedel\/posts\/pfbid0DnobjwAumgXPcakjntcpkAMrpJkjknptnHK2nqYszoabK6vhNftu6yQnMrwzeg8xl\">Cedel writes on Facebook<\/a><\/strong>. \u00ab\u00a0I will miss the sense of home I felt every time I walked into apartment 4B and saw her sitting next to the piano.\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n<p>Malas was \u00ab\u00a0one of the closest mentors\u00a0\u00bb for Canadian baritone, Grammy and Juno award nominee, and Western University Music professor James Westman, according to his <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/james.westman.12\/posts\/pfbid0nqsuVZniNNtLPoukGmK4U4fJAGSeUrHXrLMFm6g3rr1TY71FEcjohRFb4YMjzGWfl\">commemorative Facebook post<\/a><\/strong>. He says he first met her at the Canadian Opera Company \u00ab\u00a0when she was the resident vocal instructor\u00a0\u00bb and that he was lucky to study with her privately \u00ab\u00a0for many decades.\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n<p>American soprano Sydney Kucine <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/reel\/1401989603742004\">shared the \u00ab\u00a0first role\u00a0\u00bb she learned with Malas<\/a><\/strong>: Mica\u00ebla from <i>Carmen<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>Grammy award-winning American baritone and Malas\u2019s student Lucas Meachem said on <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/C0eu6hpOE-K\/\">Instagram<\/a> <\/strong>that \u00ab\u00a0the void left, I cannot define\u00a0\u00bb following her death. \u00ab\u00a0I personally owe her so much. What she gave us in her presence and love was invaluable.
