17th century Italy gave us a surprising number of female composers, whose indisputable genius we are rediscovering today. Many worked in the discrete setting of convents, while others, often from families of musicians, enjoyed careers as performers and composers in various courts, with their works published and greatly appreciated. Our program paints a portrait of baroque-era Italy, from a feminine perspective, with works by remarkable female musicians, as well as by a few composers who rallied behind them—like Vivaldi, who, throughout his life, taught the young orphan girls of La Pietà…
